MEDASA has many initiatives in mind to further the education of both the general population and the dance community. We look forward to the first two events, which will launch the various dance forms to the public with the support and backing of FEDANSA. Many other international associates have also pledged their support for these events in order to grow the various dance forms, both locally and internationally.
– 4 March from 1:30pm – MEDASA members for Oriental dance selection to participate in the nationally publicised and televised World Dance day celebrations.
This event is aimed at the Belly dance community who are invited to present groups to a selection panel who will scrutinize and select the most promising acts to participate in the grand finale of the World Dance Day’s prestigious evening event. The panel will consist of 3 MEDASA committee members, and 2 members from FEDANSA, all seen as current market leaders in their respective dance fields. The 2 FEDANSA members are, the head of Dancesport Technical Officials and the Championship Adjudicators. MEDASA members who wish to participate, will be notified of the selection criteria. The panel will also give an assessment feedback report to the participating groups, (should they request this) This will form part of the growth of each group or studio within the dance community. As this is a first time event, and is not an examination or a contest, but merely an assessment for future workshops and education possibilities and planning, the criteria will be relatively accommodating and relaxed. This will facilitate the creation of a sociable and friendly atmosphere, which in turn will help to grow the art form as a cohesive community.
– 5 May - UNESCO CID (Conseil International de la danse) – in English - International Dance Council - World Dance Day
This
day - 29 April (in South Africa we will celebrate this on 5 May) - is amongst
the most important projects of the UNESCO CID. This event will not only bring
about a deeper understanding of dance, but more importantly, will fulfil the
UNESCO aim to unite different cultures in promoting peace and harmony through
the universal medium of dance. Every year there is a different focus, e.g.
last year's focus was on primary education and the importance of having dance
in the curriculum. (Medasa is now part of this drive)
All forms of dance are represented at World Dance Day events
